Heart-brain Connections in Relation to Bipolar Disorder: Is it Time to Take Clinical Action?
×
When:
Oct 8, 2024 from 11:00 to 12:00 (ET)
This presentation will provide an overview of cardiovascular-bipolar connection spanning from epidemiology to blood biomarkers and imaging approaches. The relevance of the cardiovascular-bipolar link to the conceptualization and treatment of bipolar disorder will be emphasized, as will the potential for this link to mitigate stigma.
The association of physical health metrics with bipolar disorder and other severe psychiatric disorders is generally viewed as a byproduct of the lifestyle and pharmacological treatments associated with these conditions. The current presentation will highlight potential mechanistic associations of the vascular-bipolar connection, and will integrate the implications of these findings to screening and treatment.
Learning Objectives:
Identify factors underlying elevated cardiovascular risk in bipolar disorder
Recognize the relevance of vascular metrics to brain structure and function, and psychiatric symptoms
Consider the advantages of integrating heart health in the management and conceptualization of bipolar disorder
